Love that Look: Willow Dress with a Collar

The other day I found myself (as I often do) browsing Pinterest for some wrap dress style inspirations, when I came across a few wrap and faux wrap dresses with collar so I knew I just had to make myself one! In today’s blog I’ll show you how I achieved this timeless look using the Willow Wrap Dress pattern and this gorgeous double brushed poly form So Sew English.

Start by printing your pattern and cutting your fabric. We will now create our collar pattern. It’s easy peasy! Grab a piece of paper and draw a trapezoid with the measurements as shown in the graphic bellow. You can of course make your collar more narrow if you prefer, or even shorter. I wouldn’t make it any larger though.

Cut 2 collar pieces of your fabric and 1 of light weight fusible interfacing. Iron the interfacing to the wrong side of one of the collar pieces. IMG_5511

With the right sides together, sew around the sides and top. I use a 3.2 stitch length and around 3.5 tension. Once you finished sewing clip the corners and turn it.

Give it a good press! Don’t skip this step, ironing your collar will make it look so much more professionally made. Optionally, you can topstitch around the 3 sides, 1/8 ” from the edge. Mark the center of your collar with a pin, a clip (like I did) or just a little snip.

We will now attach the collar to the dress. Start sewing the dress according to the pattern and stop as soon as you pressed 3/4 ” for the neck/front bodice hem. Find the center of the back neckline and match the collar center with it. Pin the collar around the neckline slowly.

Using a coverstitch, a twin needle, or a zig zag stitch stitch the hem in place making sure you attach the collar at the same time.

Press well and steam to remove any waviness that might have occurred during stitching.

That’s is! See how easy that was? You have now added a collar to the Willow Wrap dress. I can’t wait to see your take on the Willow dress in the group.
