Bell Sleeve Peplum Top

Hi all!  Tami here from SewSophieLynn and I’m excited to be bringing you my Love That Look!  I’ve been loving all the loose peplum tops that are filling up stores and I especially adore those with ruffled sleeves too.

This cute version kept popping up in my Pinterest feed and I knew it was the perfect inspiration for my look.  I love the subtle grey color and the fullness seemed just right.

I knew the Terra Tunic would be the perfect base for this look.

Because I wanted my version a little looser than the inspiration, so I sized up one size.  I’m just at the top of the size small measurements so I knew going with a medium would be just about right. Tami includes markings for bust, waist, and hip lines, which I love.  This made trimming my bodice easy peasy!  I folded my pattern piece at the waist line and added a 3/8″ seam allowance.  Then, I cut out my bodice and sleeve pieces per the pattern instructions, using the elbow sleeve piece minus the hem allowance.

Let’s talk ruffles.

For my skirt ruffle, I did the width of the fabric by 10 inches.  The inspiration piece is shorter but I like my tops to hit at my hips just to keep my belly covered.  The great thing about making your own top is you can customize the length to wherever you want!  I think with a little clear elastic for stability at the seam you could even make this a cute summer dress!  For this version, I simply sewed the short sides together.  I then ran a basting line along one long edge and gathered my skirt to the width of the bodice.  I like to mark the half point before gathering and line this point up with the bodice side seam.  Then sew the skirt to your bodice- easy enough, right?!

My sleeve ruffle was a bit trickier to get the fullness and length I wanted.  The first try is on the right. Here it was cut right on the elbow sleeve line and the ruffle is 6″ by double the width of bottom of the sleeve.  I liked it just fine, but the volume of the sleeve was a little too full for my tastes.  I chopped off the ruffle and tried again.  For the look on the left the ruffle is just 1.5X the width of the bottom of the sleeve by 5.5″ and I trimmed off what would have been the sleeve hem allowance.  It’s a subtle change but I like it so much better.  You’ll also notice that I’ve left the hems raw.  One, hemming thin, drapey fabrics is the pits and two, it’s a trend in ready-to-wear that I’m happy to get on board with!

I’m super excited about this look and think there are so many possibilities with it!  Just do the peplum skirt with short sleeves for a sweet summer look.  Or add the bell sleeves to any Love Notions pattern- I’d love them on the Tessa Sheath Dress!
