Hello Love Notions fans! It’s Melissa from Made by Melli and I’m excited to be guest blogging here at Love Notions for Feature Friday! It’s only early September, but I’m in full-on Fall sewing mode! Read on to get the details on this weeks Feature Friday.
I live in Utah, and we generally experience all 4 seasons. The nights are already starting to cool off and I have even turned my heater on a couple mornings this week (gasp)! The Boyfriend Cardigan for Ladies and Girls (aff links) is an essential layering piece keep us cozy and take our summer wardrobes into the cooler months. Since they are being featured, you can grab them at a special price today only – $6 for the Girls and $7 for the Ladies.
The Boyfriend Cardigan is such a versatile pattern and has some fun options! There’s a shawl collar, pockets, side vents, and you can choose to leave the neckband off. For our cardigans, I chose to do the hooded version with the neckband. Our schedules have been crazy since school started, so I’m all about quick sews these days. These cardigans were perfect. I chose to eliminate the side vent by cutting the side seams straight down, removing the added seam allowance for the side vent. Then when I sewed my side seams, I just pinned all the way down and stitched my side seam as usual. I also chose to omit the pockets, and these really sewed up quickly!
We do get a decent bit of rain in the fall and of course snow in the winter, so I thought the hood was a great option to keep our heads dry and warm. Maci loves hoods, so much that I could hardly get a picture of her with the hood down. Oh well, at least it’s cute!
I love that the back of the cardigan is cut as two mirrored pieces and then sewn together in the center back. It really gives the cardigan a nice shape and prevents any bunching up of extra fabric in the back. The length is great, too! Let’s face it, it’s a rare occasion for me to put on a pair of jeans. Most days you will find me in a comfy pair of leggings or yoga pants, so I love that this cardi provides great booty coverage! I can be comfortable running errands, driving carpool, and chasing my kiddos around while still being modestly covered! 😉
I made my cardigan in a solid navy stretch french terry, so it’ll be a versatile piece that I can mix and match with other items in my wardrobe. I made Maci’s cardigan in a fun navy floral cotton/lycra from the same shop (in a print that is no longer available). I love the way they both turned out, and really want to try one in a fabric with more drape – maybe a sweater knit? I think it would have a totally different look and add some variety to my fall wardrobe!
Thank you for joining me for some Feature Friday fun!
