The Whistler Sweater and Hoodie is a loose fitting pullover with an inset yoke. The yoke can be made with either the shawl collar or hoodie. The in-seam pockets are an essential element to any pullover. Shirt and tunic lengths are included as well as options for a banded bottom, straight hem, or curved hem. The middle portion can be gathered or flat depending on fabric selection. This top is great for a variety of knit fabrics, everything from sweatshirt fleece to sweater knit. Make it maternity by using a drapey fabric with the gathered front. The yoke ends a couple inches below the bust which also makes it nursing friendly.

I could go on and on about how much I love the Whistler! When I first saw it I wasn’t sure I would like it, or even wear it, and now I have plans to make so many more for myself and as Christmas presents! It is the perfect mix of casual and cute. The instructions are clear (there is even a video!) and you can just sew on the buttons if button holes scare you 😉

  2. ammonlane

This is the coziest sweater ever! I love the optional facing to finish the bottom, or you can hem it or band it! With the hood or Shawl color, different length options, and the absolutely huge bit not bulky at pockets-it’s my favorite. Plus – I can nurse in it!! The construction of this pattern is top notch and even though pieces look all crazy when cutting it out the instructions are incredibly clear. Love it!

  3. Pat English (verified owner)

As we have come to expect from Love Notions patterns, the Whistler has clear concise directions which will lead you to a distinctive garment that collects compliments. And also as we’ve come to expect, there are many options so you can keep making the Whistler and have it look like a different pattern each time. I was concerned that this might be a tricky sew, but quickly learned that it’s not at all difficult. Very happy indeed with my new Whistler!

  4. Victoria

This is such a comfortable pullover! I love that when you make the hoodie it doesn’t have a big kangaroo pocket in the front–it’s different. As always, instructions are very clear and construction was easy. You can dress it up for work or casual for the weekend. A new staple in my closet!

  5. Laura (verified owner)

love how easy this is to put together. the pockets are a great place to hold the phone and wallet so I do not need to bring a purse. I like that the pattern comes in bigger sizes

  6. Patty

This pattern is perfect for making a warm and snugly top! Very clear instructions.

  7. jmmarvin (verified owner)

Such a great pattern! I like the look of the shawl collar with the buttons. The instructions were really easy to follow which is always a plus.

  8. Trista

Love the construction of this pullover. Love the pockets and everything about it.

  9. diane (verified owner)

I made this for my daughter who is now 6 months pregnant. She loves it!!! She likes to wear hoodies, so this is the dressy version. I can see it will get a lot of use 🙂

  10. Sandra Heath (verified owner)

I cut it out one night and sewed it up the next day, it looked complicated but went together very easily. I love how cozy it is and will make a few more, and I think it`ll make great gifts. I will be making one for my daughter as she is tall, the tunic length with a hood and thumb holes will be perfect for her!!!!

  11. Glenda (verified owner)

I love my Whistler! I made the shawl collar and it is so cozy. Excellent sizing and instructions!

  12. parosc (verified owner)

Love this top! Clever construction and so very well drafted that I didn’t even need to use the notches. I have made both the shawl and hoodie and am very happy with both versions.

  13. Stephanie (verified owner)

This top looks difficult, but it is really simple to sew! Took me 2 hours (already had it cut out). I wear mine very often. Great for layering in the winter, cool summer nights, or warmish fall nights at football games! I need to make more!

  14. Paula (verified owner)

A great looking casual top, excellent fit. Looks like a complicated sew but was surprised how quickly it came together, the video explaining the construction of the front pocket was a godsend as the written instruction did have me scratching my head a bit! Have made this in French terry block colours of lime green and black. Am going to make a second in a cosy knitted jersey fabric for the approaching winter days

    • Keira Wood

Hi Paula! So happy to hear the video was helpful to you. That colorblocked version sounds amazing! Lime green is one of my favorite colours! ~K

  15. Hannah Carriere (verified owner)

At first I was unsure I’d be able to figure this one out – the pattern pieces had me worried. But I should have known – clear instructions and even a video made this awesome top a breeze to make. Such fun!

  16. Debi Mager (verified owner)

Oh my goodness this is the most comfortable top ever. I watched the video to help me with the top and it was easy! The fit is great. I love the pockets. I love the collar. I’ll be making lots more of these!!!

  17. Margaret Eames (verified owner)

I found this pattern a bit of a challenge mainly because I had never made anything in this style hiwever, the top came together so well and in Ponte Roma its turned out to be a lovely warm addition to my wardrobe. I think the bext one will be slightly smaller but will be making again. Love it

  18. thats_my_horse (verified owner)

I bought this instantly when it came up on $5 Friday, even though I was supposed to be on a pattern buying break. I just love the unique details and all the different options in one pattern, and yay for video help with the tricky bits!

This top is so cute and comfy! It’s great for winter/fall The directions are so easy to follow! I love that Love Notions has projector files too now! And so many of their tops have FBAs built in! It makes sewing tops so much easier!

  23. Andrea Guedez (verified owner)

This is my favorite sweater!!! Why?? It’s a sweater but it’s still feminine. I love that it looks super complex but it is so easy to make!! I have 4 of them and I love them!!!

  24. Alyssa Highland (verified owner)

I learned so many new skills while sewing the Whistler! I love how pulled together it looks, while it feels like leisurewear. 2020 had me doing lots of remote and virtual meetings. I loved having a few whistlers in different fabrics to throw on and look like I was office-ready. As always, the videos and links in the instructions were helpful for the steps that I couldn’t get from the 2D instructions.

  25. janamonin (verified owner)

One of my favorite Love Notions patterns! It has so many options to choose from! I have made it out of lighter french terry knit when we lived in California. But now that we live in Indiana I am sewing up thicker versions. Super comfy, and warm.I love the shawl collar to keep the cold off my neck. Clever construction that is easier than I thought it would be. The Whistler serves me from fall though out spring! None of my versions look the same!

  26. Tamara (verified owner)

I was intimated to try this pattern, but learned so much & love how it turned out, one of my favorite cozy tops for fall & winter!

  27. kylie.hoehn (verified owner)

Whistler is my absolute favorite pattern of all the patterns I’ve every sewn for myself! It is my go to “This fabric is too special to mess up” pattern because it looks great in every fabric I’ve tried from nicely draping sweater knits to structured cotton french terry. It is super flattering. My favorite is the gathered center with a banded bottom and shawl collar.

The pieces look a little overwhelming at first, but the instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow. Everything fits together well and I kind of feel like a magician turning it right side out when finished.

  28. mtngirlpaleo (verified owner)

I just made the Whistler with the hood out of a rib knit for fall, I now plan on living in this sweater until spring! This pattern has so many variations and I can’t wait to make another out of French Terry and cozy up with the shawl collar.

  29. Val. (verified owner)

I love my Whistler ! It’s very comfy, favorite cozy top for cold seasons ! Like the shawl collar, the big pockets. I make it tunic length, in heavy sweater knit, with leggings, it’s perfect !
    Thanks LN ????

  30. Tamara (verified owner)

I didn’t think I could make this, but with the sewalong & videos, I did it! It is so cozy & I get compliments every time I wear it. Thank you for a great pattern & the support!

  31. Shirley Jarrett (verified owner)

My favorite go to sweater last winter was the Whistler! Lots of options, great fit!

  32. angela919 (verified owner)

I have made two of these and although it looks complicated, it is quite straight forward, I found the video extremely helpful. Always get compliments when I wear them.

  33. angela919 (verified owner)

I have made two of these and although it looks complicated, it is quite straight forward, I found the video extremely helpful.

  34. ruthspory (verified owner)

Excellent pattern directions and very cool construction. I made my first out of french terry and it was so comfy and cozy in the winter. I made it with the hood option. When people compliment me on the dress they cannot believe I sewed it myself. I appear to be a much better sewist than I am in reality and that is due to the wonderful Love notions patterns i use.

  35. Elisabeth Hirschi (verified owner)

I love the coziness of this sweater and that it is maternity friendly without looking obviously maternity.

  36. Helenanne Judisch (verified owner)

I made my first Whistler in April. I took the pattern and fabric with me to a retreat in March but struggled a bit with how to best grade the front pieces between a medium in the neck, shoulders and through the bust to a large waist and extra large hip. I waited until I was home and could easily access the assembly instructions. I found the link to the video demonstrating how to assemble the front pieces. Watched it once and it made assembly perfectly clear. Finished grading, cutting and the sweater came together so easily.
Very happy with my Whistler and received many comments about it’s perfect fit when I wore it to my next quilt retreat.

  37. bjsmart (verified owner)

Absolutely loved this pattern. Made the tunic and the dress

  38. Margaret Monson (verified owner)

Great pattern, sewed one up in french terry with the FBA according to my measurements and it fits great. It does work for nursing but it’s a bit difficult to stretch the french terry over to nurse. I got some rib knit for another one that will hopefully work better for nursing.

  39. Dale Luxford (verified owner)

This is a fun pattern to put together. I’ve made myself the shall collar, tunic length, but I am looking forward to trying out the dress version that has been added. Very nice 🙂

  40. Kathy Garnett (verified owner)

a trickier pattern to make but the instructions are great. I’ve made it twice!

  41. shelley Kearney (verified owner)

My first ever Love Notions pattern and it did not disappoint. I was very new to sewing at the time and was quite nervous as the construction is quite unique. However the instructions were excellent and I took my time. It just seemed to flow and suddenly come together. I made this 2 years ago and it got so tatty it went in recycling. I must make a new one.

  42. karen.d.warren (verified owner)

Love the different collar and pockets. So unique and fun!!!

  43. robine_30 (verified owner)

This is such a unique pattern! It’s as comfy as jammies but looks far more classy than a typical sweatshirt. There are a couple of tricky parts, but the instructions are so clear that it went together easily.

  44. Deanne Dexter (verified owner)

I’ve sewn 5, lol. Sherpa fleece made this a great Christmas gift for my daughters. I downsize on this pattern.

  45. Lisa Allred (verified owner)

Love Notions is my favorite pattern shop!💕 Patterns are so well explained. Every step is explained completely with pictures, not one step is left out…no steps that you’re just supposed to know to do… every step is explained! No guessing if it’s going to come together in the end or if I’ve missed something. So as a beginner I can have a finished piece that I will wear!!
The Whistler sweater has been my most often worn piece this winter. It is cozy, soo comfy and was really fun to make!! I put it together in an afternoon, I had the fabric cut the previous day. Instructions were very clear and I didn’t have any problems. The pattern is so genius- pieces are so differently shaped to form the comfiest and well placed large pockets that I really love. The front doesn’t look or feel like a boxy sweater – but it has the comfort of one! It is a really cute sweater- one that I get compliments on often.
I love shawl collars and this one was very easy to make. I love that LN patterns have so many options to choose that I can make this many times and each will be a bit different. That is so fun! Such a great pattern! One that I’m sure to make over and over. I think every winter I’ll need a new Whistler sweater! I made mine out of heathered purple – brushed fleece on both sides- ‘dralon stretch fleece’ from fabricwholesaledirect.
Great pattern! Fun to make! Awesome piece to wear!!

  46. cynthia-6329 (verified owner)

Amazing, amazing, what more can I say. The pocket construction is so good. Made 2 for my MIL and she loved it.

  47. mtngirlpaleo (verified owner)

I LOVE THIS PATTERN! It is perfect for a Fall or Spring day, and is really cozy for Winter as well. I made the Shawl collar, and plan on making at least 4 more in different colors so I can wear them pretty much non stop.

  48. Rene Lewthwaite (verified owner)

Love this pattern so much. The construction can be a little bit tricky, but don’t worry, the instructions are clear enough that if you take your time and work through them, you will have a really great sweater sewn up in no time. Super comfy and love the style of the pockets!

  49. Hannah Keller (verified owner)

I have loved this pattern for years! I kept eyeing it and never buying because I was nervous about the construction, but when I was expecting my first baby girl and looking for maternity friendly patterns, I knew it was time to brave this one. Tami’s tutorial and video made construction and absolute breeze, and I whipped up two in no time! I love how easy she makes everything seem. Excellent teacher… I can’t even use other pattern companies anymore!🫣

  50. jessicagmac (verified owner)

Love this pattern for the shawl collar. It may look complicated to put together but it is very easy once you complete it the first time. I get so many compliments on this pattern. Can’t wait to make more!
